Welcome to THE

Sifu Mak

Founder & Chief Instructor

I established The Kung Fu School, formerly Orpington School of Martial Arts, in 1995 after years studying various styles.

Developed over nearly three decades the system taught is effective, practical and accessible to all, derived primarily from the explosive Praying Mantis Kung Fu system.

OUR APPROACH

The classes are informal and friendly with an emphasis on students helping one another progress.  Sifu Mak takes a personal overview of each and every students individual training progression. We encourage personal development in all aspects of the art, emotionally, mentally and physically and we are dedicated to bringing out the best in our students.

CLASSES FOR ALL

The school offers everything that you’d expect from a martial arts school and much more.

We are an independent school with no affiliation with an outside governing organisation avoiding any martial arts politics.  This enables us to teach effective and practical martial arts freely.

You are welcome to come and try out our lessons and we look forward to meeting you soon.

What our students say

As a relative newcomer to “Kung Fu” I have been most impressed with Sifu Mak’s varied and enthusiatic teaching style in which he delivers solid techniques in a hardworking but rewarding atmosphere

Sifu Mak’s classes have enabled me to indentify the areas that I am weaker in, particularly my hand strikes and blocks, whilst learning the new techniques and styles that “Praying Mantis” Kung Fu offers

I would recommend Sifu Mak’s classes to even the most seasoned of Martial Artists, despite training with 6th Dan grades I always take many new ideas and lessons away with me from Sifu Mak’s classes

At times I have lacked confidence and motivation, however, I have always received help by various members of the class. Sifu Mak has provided encouragement and got me to focus on my ability and confidence

The system uses close, medium and long range striking techniques and the body is conditioned and strengthened with external Chi Kung exercises

By having compared this system with others I’m beginning to get the sense of what is working for me and what isn’t. I plan to continue training and combining what I’ve learned into a personal version of Kung Fu

I’ve trained with The Kung Fu School for 8 years. I had previously trained in Tae Kwon Do, and found Praying Mantis to be a far more practical and realistic style

The class is a mixture of traditional Chinese techniques based on the short-range Southern Mantis system, along with longer range punches and kicks, and sessions of pad and mitt work to train power and stamina

I still learn something new almost every lesson, whilst still improving my technique, the sessions also provide a complete workout for the arms, legs and general endurance

Although rules are followed in the classes, the atmosphere is pretty informal and friendly, but little time is wasted, with the focus being on constant improvement and training

F.A.Q.
Can I train Kung Fu?

Yes of course you can! just as long as you are over 8 years of age.

How much do classes cost?

Adult classes are £12 a session or you can choose to pay monthly or quarterly via Direct Debit.  Children’s class is £25 per month.

What do I need to wear?

Wear some loose light clothing such as plain jogging bottoms and a plain T-shirt. After you have been for a few lessons, you can order black kungfu bottoms and kungfu T-shirt from the school.

What is the format of a typical class?

The lessons are conducted in a friendly atmosphere and will begin with a few simple warm up exercises that are suitable for beginners and seniors. Then we practice our basic techniques then we gradually move onto more advanced techniques. If necessary we split up the class into sections to accommodate different levels.  The class then progresses to the teaching of specific self defence situations.

I have never practised a martial art before, can I come along?

Yes! Beginners are always welcome to our foundation classes, and will be taught at a pace suitable to the individual with one to one tuition. Contact us first though to make an appointment.

How long does it take to get my Black Belt

Although we do have a grading system in place to help track students progress.  Our emphasis will not be on you attaining your black belt, but for you develop as a martial artist. The attainment of the grades is to assist you in a direction. When you come to class, no one wears belts.  Martial Arts is a lifetime endeavour.
