Can I train Kung Fu?

Yes of course! you can, just as long as you are over 14 years of age.

What do I need to wear?

All you need to wear are some plain jogging bottoms and a plain white T-shirt. After you have been for a few lessons, the school will order black kungfu bottoms and white kungfu T-shirt.

What is the format of a typical class?

The lessons are conducted in a friendly atmosphere and will begin with a few simple warm up exercises that are suitable for beginners and seniors. Then we practice our basic techniques then we gradually move onto more advanced techniques. If necessary we split up the class into sections to accommodate different levels.

The class then progresses to the teaching of specific self defence situations. Following this you will then usually work at the appropriate grading syllabus with a partner of your current grade.

I have never practised a martial art before, can I come along?

Yes! Beginners are always welcome to our foundation classes, and will be taught at a pace suitable to the individual with one to one tuition. Contact us through our Contact Us section for more details

I have been training for years in other styles, can I come along?

Yes! The club always welcomes students from other styles. If you want to progress through our grading system you will probably have to start at the first grade and continue like the other beginners. Even if your kungfu is quite similar to ours, you may have to start again. Ask the instructor about this.

Is the training dangerous?

Every step is taken to minimise the risk of injury during training. If you follow the instructor's advice properly there should be very little risk. Please inform the instructor at the start of a class of any injury which you already have. Accidents are extremely rare, and the club is insured for injury to participants.

How does the insurance cover work?

Your first lesson does not require you to commit to joining our association. However if you enjoy the class and wish to continue you must join the Amateur Martial Arts Association. For more details contact the instructors. The AMA provides full insurance for training sessions where a AMA coach is present.

Do women train ?

Yes. The majority of techniques used in Kungfu for self defence rely on technique and not physical strength.

Attendance

The members put a lot of time and effort to run the school and teach students within it. Please try to be punctual and always arrive on time, lateness is considered disrespectful. A plan of training is set out for each student when they join, it is therefore important absence is kept to a minimum and only when absolutely necessary, your Sifu, Si-Hing's and Si-Je's invest time and effort to train you so show them the same dedication and respect. Try to inform of any absences to your Sifu, Si-Hing or Si-Je or leave a message on the website. www.kungfuschool.co.uk We are a non profit school and absence is not only disruptive to your training but also for the other students and instructors. The school reserves the right to ask anyone to leave due to constant absence.

Behaviour

At the school we would like to ensure a friendly atmosphere that allows us all to train to our potential. The school is run as a Kung Fu family therefore any untoward behaviour and aggression toward any of its members will not be tolerated. Similarly it is absolutely forbidden for you to misuse the skills learnt at the school.

Kwoon Rules

As in any kwoon there are certain rules which should be upheld at all times

1) Before entering and exiting the Kwoon you must bow and hand fist salute, showing respect for the school and its members.

2) Remove street before entering the training area, the Kwoon. Removing our street shoes is an ancient tradition. It is a sign of a visitor's humility to remove their footwear and it preserves the hygiene of the Kwoon.

3) Aim to be 5 minutes early to your lesson as being late is a sign of bad manners and disrespect to your Sifu.

4) Always walk quietly to the rear of a class in session. Never walk in front of the Sifu during a class.

5) If necessary, speak quietly when class in session and never when your Sifu is speaking.

6) No eating, drinking (except water), smoking or chewing gum in the kwoon.

7) Control your emotions at all times. The Kwoon is an excellent place to increase your self control.

8) Refrain from using foul language in or near the Kwoon.

9) Always bow to the Sifu at the beginning and end of each class. Likewise, bow to your workout partner when practicing together.

10) Questions are encouraged throughout the lesson however they must be asked in the proper way and if necessary your Sifu will answer them after the lesson. Raise your hand should you have a question. Your Sifu will reserve a proper time in class to answer questions you may have. Do not disrupt the flow of the class by interrupting the Sifu with too many questions, these will often disrupt the flow of class and ultimately slow your progress.

11) Possession of drugs or alcohol in the Kwoon is grounds for immediate dismissal.

12) Students should wear the traditional uniform in all classes. Once you have been awarded a sash you will also be required to wear this with pride. This uniform allows you "to change hats" increasing your ability to learn and therefore increasing your success. Take advantage of this!

13) A dirty wrinkled uniform reflects badly on you as a student. Always wear a clean uniform to class. Take pride in your uniform!

14) Refer to your instructor with a title: Sifu and Senior members Si-Hing and Si-Je. The respect you show towards others is a reflection of the respect you have for yourself and the arts.

15) It is poor judgment to always be asking about your next rank or wanting more material. This shows a lack of patience, humility and disrespect towards your Sifus professional judgment. When your Sifu feels you are ready for more material he will be eager to share it with you. We all want to see you honestly progress.

16) Support your Kwoon. Always purchase your equipment from your Sifu. We will always strive to get you the best price and quality. By keeping the business in the Kwoon, you help keep your tuition lower.

REMEMBER TO SWITCH OFF YOUR MOBILES!
